Protea Secondary School, was established in 1975. Originally a primary school built in 1964, additions were made by the then Education Department to upgrade the buildings and convert it's status to a Secondary school. This included the addition of Administration Building , Library, Music Centre, two Science Laboratories, a Lecture Theatre, Typing Room, Hospitality Centre, Technical Drawing Room and both a Metal and Woodworking centre.
This is a co-education school located in Bayview, Chatsworth, KwaZulu Natal. We presently cater for learners from the greater South Durban region viz. Chatsworth, Umlazi, Lamontville, Montclair and Yellowwood Park areas. These learners are mostly from the lower socio-economic sectors. Most funding for the school is usually generated from the efforts of Educators and learners through fund raising activities and voluntary sponsors. The school is generally required to pay for its own upkeep and maintenance.
Nevertheless, Protea Secondary can boast a proud history of achievement and accolades. Many of our learners have moved on to to become successful businessmen and professionals. Learners have excelled in both the academic and sporting sectors. This is made possible by continuous dedicated and committed efforts of all role players including the Management, Educators, Learners, and parents.
Our goal is to always strive for excellence and to achieve our best.

Walking through the gates of Protea Secondary in 1976 was the beginning of my secondary school career, and not knowing what the future holds. One is expected to overcome and be successful going through all the trials and tribulations of life. I believe one has the choice to either stand up and fight or lie down and die. For all the present and future students, you may not have had any influence on the past but always remember you are in control of your future. Do not let your present environment overshadow your dreams and aspirations. I wish you everything of the best in your future endeavors.
